# Import expenses from CSV

Bring the bills you keep in a spreadsheet into Figa with a CSV file, check the preview and import.

Already track your bills in a spreadsheet? Save it as a CSV file and import it into a workspace: one-time expenses land on their dates, and recurring bills become series with their schedules.

## Prepare the file

Open **Workspace settings → Import** and select **Download template**, or build the file yourself. The first row holds the column names:

```
type,name,amount,currency,category,recipient,date,schedule,start_date,end_date,description,is_paid
```

| Column | What to put in it |
| --- | --- |
| `type` | `instance` for a one-time expense or `recurring` for a series. |
| `name` | Expense name. Required. |
| `amount` | Amount, for example `150.00`. Required. |
| `currency` | Optional. Leave it empty to use the workspace's base currency. |
| `category` | Category name. Optional: leave it empty for no category. |
| `recipient` | Who you pay. Optional. |
| `date` | Date of a one-time expense, as `YYYY-MM-DD`. |
| `schedule` | Schedule of a recurring expense, for example `monthly on 1st`. |
| `start_date` | First date of a recurring expense, as `YYYY-MM-DD`. Required for `recurring`. |
| `end_date` | Last date of a recurring expense. Optional: leave it empty for no end. |
| `description` | Notes, up to 1,000 characters. Optional. |
| `is_paid` | `true`, `yes` or `1` imports a one-time expense as paid. Leave it empty for recurring rows: mark their occurrences paid in the app. |

### Schedules Figa understands

-   `daily`, `every 3 days`
-   `weekly on monday`, `weekly on mon,wed,fri`, `every 2 weeks on friday`
-   `monthly on 1st`, `monthly on 15th`, `monthly on last`, `monthly on 2nd monday`
-   `quarterly on 1st`
-   `yearly`

Files can be up to 5 MB and 1,000 rows.

## Review and import

1. Drop the CSV file on the page, or browse for it.
2. Check the preview. Each row is marked **Valid** or **Duplicate**, and rows with a problem show which value is invalid.
3. Choose the **Import options**: **Auto-create missing categories**, **Auto-create missing recipients** and **Skip duplicates (name + amount + date)**. The preview shows how many categories and recipients will be created.
4. Select **Import**. The summary shows how many expenses and recurring series were created.

**Variable bills**

Variable monthly bills cannot be imported from CSV. Import the bill as a fixed amount, or add it in the app and choose **Variable monthly bill**. See [Variable bills and forecasts](https://getfiga.com/help/bill-forecasts).
